A major Carabinieri operation dismantled the drug axis between Scampia and Calabrian clans, with arrests and targeted searches. This raid highlights the Vanella Grassi clan's persistent control over drug trafficking.

  • What happened: Blitz in Scampia against the Vanella Grassi clan.
  • Because it is important: A criminal network between Naples and Calabria has been decapitated.
  • What now: Investigations continue to further dismantle mafia networks.
  • Useful detail: Scampia remains a crucial hub for cocaine trafficking.
  • Historical ties: Collaborations between Vanella Grassi and Calabrian 'ndrine have emerged.

Naples – The eerie silence of the Vele di Scampia was shattered, at first light, by the roar of engines and the sirens of the Carabinieri of the Naples Provincial Command.

A major operation, coordinated by the Neapolitan District Anti-Mafia Directorate, led to the execution of a precautionary measure that decapitated the new members of the Vanella Grassi clan, the infamous "Girati," protagonists of the bloodiest periods of the feud.

Handcuffs and searches: the charges

The crimes charged by the investigating judge of the Naples Court comprise a disturbing criminal mosaic: mafia-style criminal conspiracy, brutal robberies, possession of weapons of war, and widespread control of drug dealing centers. All of this is aggravated by the "mafia method," testifying to a ferocity that has never left the streets of Secondigliano and surrounding neighborhoods.

The “bridge” with San Luca

But the most significant finding emerging from the order is the consolidation of a criminal network that spans regional borders. Among those targeted are prominent members of the Nirta-Strangio 'ndrina mafia in Reggio Calabria. This pact of blood and business confirms that Scampia remains the main hub for the distribution of cocaine shipments handled by Calabrian brokers.

The "new recruits" arrested

The investigation sheds light on the reorganization of the Vanella Grassi clan, which, despite numerous state attacks in recent years, continued to exert suffocating pressure on the territory, heavily arming itself to defend its borders from attacks by rival groups.

The ties between Vanella Grassi and the 'Ndrangheta

From investigations in recent years (coordinated by the DDA of Naples and Reggio Calabria) and from reports by the DIA (Anti-Mafia Investigative Directorate), several historical and recent points of contact between the Vanella Grassi clan and the Calabrian gangs emerge:

Operation "Ivy" and drug traffickingSeveral investigations have revealed how the Vanella Grassi family acted as a "commercial terminal" for drugs imported by the San Luca 'ndrine (such as the Nirta-Strangio and Pelle-Vottari families). The 'Ndrangheta, thanks to its direct contacts with South American cartels, acts as a wholesaler, while the "Girati" family ensures military control and retail sales in the streets of Scampia.

The figure of the “Broker”Past investigations have revealed summits between Vanella Grassi members and Calabrian middlemen that took place not only in Naples but also in Lombardy, where both organizations have branches. The Calabrians offer "logistical services" and payment guarantees that few other criminal groups can afford.

The change of strategyAfter the split from the Di Lauro family, Vanella Grassi sought complete autonomy. To achieve this, it needed solid suppliers who weren't tied to the old Neapolitan cartels. The San Luca clans represented the ideal partner for product quality and reliable delivery.

Infiltration into companies: Beyond drugs, recent DIA reports highlight how the synergy between the Camorra and the 'Ndrangheta is shifting towards the business world (security, sanitation, and judicial auctions), where Neapolitan "strike force" combines with Calabrian financial capacity.
