"The child is not unfit for transplantation, and we've asked Monaldi Hospital to get a second opinion from Bambino Gesù Hospital in Rome. I think it's normal that the trust between the child's family and Monaldi Hospital has deteriorated somewhat. They just want confirmation that the heart is still transplantable, so we can breathe a sigh of relief."
Although "according to our medical examiner's opinion, the child would present a clinical condition that would now make him unfit for a transplant."
This is according to lawyer Francesco Petruzzi, who is representing the family of the child admitted to the Monaldi Hospital in Naples, at the center of the case of the heart that arrived damaged due to an error in the preservation procedures during transport.
The lawyer explains that the family should receive official communications on the child's condition this afternoon, following a meeting with the facility's health workers.
The request for a "third opinion"
While reporting the family consultant's assessment, Petruzzi announced his intention to ask the Monaldi health management for further external assessment: a "third-party opinion" from the Bambino Gesù pediatric hospital in Rome, with the aim of clarifying whether the child is still considered transplantable and, possibly, transferable.
The context: the failed transplant of December 23
The child, the lawyer recalls, had undergone an attempted heart implant on December 23rd. The organ, according to reports, was compromised because it was "burned" during transport due to the incorrect use of ice during preservation procedures.
“The relationship of trust has failed”
The statements attributed to Petruzzi also highlight a key human and healthcare aspect: "The relationship of trust with Monaldi Hospital has broken down," he states, linking the need for a new clinical assessment to the possibility of considering transferring the child.

I thought the situation was different, but now I understand it's complicated. The relationship between the family and Monaldi Hospital is certainly fragile. We hope the third-party opinion will clarify the child's condition for the transplant.
