A Fiat Panda, for reasons currently being investigated, left the road, broke through a concrete wall and fell into a ravine approximately 100 metres deep.
25 meters.

Who were the two occupants?

Two friends were traveling on board: Paolo Iannucci, 37, originally from Caserta and resident in Dugenta, and Mario Marotta, 38, born in Maddaloni and resident in Caiazzo.

Marotta, who was on the passenger side, was the one who got the worst of it: there was nothing that could be done for him.

Rescue and hospitalization

The Telese Terme Fire Department responded to the scene, supported by the SAF Unit, which specializes in operations in harsh environments. The recovery operations proved complex. According to initial reports, one of the two young men was found outside the vehicle and the other inside the vehicle that had fallen into the ravine.

Iannucci was extracted and handed over to 118 paramedics. After initial transport to the San Pio hospital, he was airlifted to the Ospedale del Mare in Naples. He is intubated and remains in serious condition.

Investigations into the dynamics

Carabinieri from the Montesarchio Company were also present and have begun investigations to reconstruct the exact circumstances of the accident. Investigators are currently examining the circumstances. An initial reconstruction suggests that the two friends were returning from the Caserta capital.

Funerals and mourning

Mario Marotta's body was transferred to the San Pio morgue and has already been released. The funeral is scheduled for this afternoon in Limatola; Mayor Domenico Parisi has declared a day of mourning. After the ceremony, the coffin will be buried in Caiazzo, where the 38-year-old lived.

The mayors' condolences

Deep condolences are being expressed in the affected communities. The mayor of Dugenta, Clemente Di Cerbo, expressed his sympathy to the families: "We are deeply saddened by this event. We hope that Paolo can continue to fight for his life, while we extend our heartfelt condolences to the family of the other young man who is experiencing immense pain at this time."
