Campagna – The curtain falls abruptly on the administration led by Mayor Biagio Luongo. This morning, Wednesday, February 11, 2026, the Municipality of Campagna—one of the largest towns in the Salerno area with over 17 inhabitants—suffered a fatal blow: twelve city councilors tendered their irrevocable resignations.
The notarial deed and the dissolution
The crisis, which had been simmering for some time, officially exploded before a notary, where six members of the majority and six of the opposition simultaneously signed the resignation document. The document (file no. 38.222) was filed with the Institution's records office at noon, effectively marking the end of the mandate that began in 2023.
The signatories who pulled the plug on the city government are: Raffaele Naimoli, Gaetano Mirra, Salvatore Luongo, Adelfio Pierro, Sara Romanzi, Enrico Tommasiello, Pier Francesco D'Ambrosio, Adele Amoruso, Liberato Naimoli, Cosimo Tommasiello, Luca D'Ambrosio, and Pietro Magliano.
The reasons for the breakup
The person who actually delivered the document was Councilor Gaetano Mirra, who took to social media to express his bitter motives for the decision. "This wasn't an overnight decision," Mirra explained, emphasizing that the crisis stems from the failure of political agreements reached after a previous cabinet reshuffle.
According to the former councilor, despite the signing of a document calling for transparency, collegiality, and greater participation, the requests of elected representatives remained "dead letters." The criticism is directed at a management of power deemed too closed and disrespectful of the Council's institutional roles.
Towards the administration
With the resignation of the absolute majority of council members (12 out of 16), the door is now open to a special administration. The Secretary General has already forwarded official communications to the Prefect of Salerno, who in the coming hours will decree the suspension of the City Council and appoint a Prefectural Commissioner. This Commissioner will lead the Municipality of Campagna toward new elections, managing the day-to-day administration of a vast and complex territory.

The news of the councilors' resignations is very surprising and raises questions about how suddenly local politics can change. We hope that swift solutions will be found for the management of the municipality and that stability can be restored.
