Naples – In Campania, the lack of access to healthcare continues to be a silent emergency. Over the course of 2025, approximately 1,5 million patients forwent seeking treatment, held back by financial constraints or excessively long waiting times in the public healthcare system.
This is what emerges from a survey commissioned by Facile.it from the research institute mUp Research, which paints a picture of serious criticality for regional healthcare.
Closed waiting lists: one in two patients without an appointment
Among the most alarming aspects revealed by the survey is the phenomenon of "closed waiting lists," meaning the inability to book the requested service. More than one in two patients reported having encountered this situation at least once, effectively making visits and tests in the public health system inaccessible.
Rush to private practice: average cost of 190 euros per service
Faced with these challenges, more and more citizens in Campania are turning to private healthcare. According to data, 89% of patients resorted to private healthcare at least once in 2025, incurring significant costs: the average cost per service at a private facility stood at around €190.
Treatment in installments: nearly 180 people have applied for loans.
To avoid having to forgo treatment or to avoid an excessive impact on the family budget, nearly 180 patients have resorted to loans, turning to financial institutions, friends, or relatives.
"Consumer credit can be an important tool for meeting significant and often unexpected expenses, such as healthcare," explain the experts at Facile.it. "The ability to spread payments allows you to avoid postponing appointments, tests, or treatments that, if neglected, risk worsening over time."
Health Loans: Amounts, Installments, and Applicant Profiles
According to the joint Observatory Facile.it – Prestiti.it, personal loans for medical expenses accounted for almost 4% of all loans requested in Campania.
The average amount requested was €5.522, with an average instalment of €123 to be repaid over 52 months.
Analyzing the applicants' profiles, it emerges that the average age at the time of application was just over 46, higher than the regional average for those requesting a personal loan (around 44).
In 32% of cases, the applicant was a woman, a significantly higher percentage than the total loan requests in Campania, where the female component stops at 22%.

Access to healthcare in Campania is a serious problem, but it's unclear why there are closed waiting lists. Many patients are forced to resort to private care, spending a lot of money that not everyone has; it's truly worrying.
