Naples – Severe weather continues to grip Campania. The regional Civil Protection Department, based on the latest analyses from the Operational Center, has issued a new critical weather warning for tomorrow, Thursday, February 12th.

The yellow alert will remain in effect for twelve hours, from 8:00 a.m. to 20:00 p.m., and will cover much of the region with a dual risk: heavy rain and strong winds.

Rain and thunderstorms: areas at risk

Precipitation will hit the coastal area and northern inland areas particularly hard. Specifically, the rain and thunderstorm warning applies to:

Zone 1: Campanian plain, Naples, Islands and Vesuvian area;

Zone 2: Upper Volturno and Matese;

Zone 3: Sorrento-Amalfi Peninsula, Sarno Mountains and Picentini Mountains;

Zones 5, 6 and 8: Tusciano, Alto Sele, Piana Sele and the entire Cilento area.

Experts warn that the phenomena could become very intense on a local scale, triggering potential flooding, overflowing, and a dangerous rise in water levels.

Strong winds and storm surges

Along with the hydrogeological risk, a significant increase in winds is expected. Winds, initially strong from the west, will shift to the northwest in the afternoon. Gusts will particularly affect the coast and mountainous areas (Zones 1, 3, 5, 6, and 8), causing rough seas.

The risk of storm surges along exposed coasts is real, and maximum caution is recommended near piers and docks.

Soil monitoring and precautions

High levels of vigilance remain in place regarding land conservation. Due to soil saturation from previous rains, rockfall or landslides cannot be ruled out.

The Civil Protection Agency invites citizens and local authorities to monitor structures exposed to wind stress and to pay attention to road signs in areas most prone to flooding.
