The Carabinieri of the NAS (National Anti-Corruption Agency) in Salerno have intensified food safety checks, combing supermarkets and restaurants in the provinces of Salerno, Avellino, and Benevento. In Benevento, a joint inspection with the Local Health Authority (ASL) led to the immediate closure of a supermarket.

The officers encountered alarming sanitary conditions: widespread filth, cobwebs, damaged ceilings, broken floors, and shattered windows without insect screens. Irregularities also affected the cold storage rooms, dirty display cases, and the failure to sterilize tools in the butcher's shop.

The facility, which lacked hot water and changing rooms for employees, was storing food in an unsafe manner. Violations of HACCP standards resulted in fines of €3.

Butcher's shop suspended and seizures in the Salerno area

In the Salerno area, a supermarket in the capital city had its butcher's department immediately closed. Here too, sanitation deficiencies were evident: missing ceilings, damp, old dirt, foreign objects, and poorly stored food. The store will also need to upgrade its intrusion detection systems and renovate its changing rooms and storage areas.

In Cilento, the NAS (National Anti-Corruption Agency) seized 25 kilos of meat, fish, fresh pasta, and frozen desserts from a restaurant because they lacked the necessary traceability documents. The owners were ordered to perform an extraordinary cleaning of the refrigerators and repair some equipment.

Widespread checks: Irno Valley, Sele Plain, and Irpinia

The NAS operation has also extended to other areas. In the Irno Valley and the Sele Plain, a restaurant and a home catering company were fined for failing to comply with self-monitoring procedures and for structural deficiencies in walls and ceilings, as well as for food storage issues.

Finally, at a restaurant-pizzeria in the province of Avellino, the Carabinieri ordered the repair of some minor hygiene irregularities. Overall, the suspended structures have an estimated value of €1,5 million, while the administrative fines amount to €7.500.

I think it's fair that inspections are necessary, but the news is written in a confusing way. The facility was poorly maintained, with widespread dirt, cobwebs, damaged ceilings, and dirty display stands. The owners didn't care and weren't prepared. People are now afraid and don't know where to turn.
