Moments of panic marred the traditional Carnival parade in Sarno, in the province of Salerno. This morning, a heavy allegorical figure suddenly collapsed from one of the floats passing along Corso Vittorio Emanuele, falling into the crowd.
The accident injured three people: two men and a child. Emergency medical services and law enforcement immediately responded to the scene, providing first aid and securing the area to prevent further danger.
The three injured were taken to the hospital. While the two men's conditions appear to be unsafe, the little girl's condition is more serious. According to unofficial sources, she reportedly suffered fractures to both legs. She was then urgently transferred to the Santobono Pediatric Hospital in Naples for specialized treatment.
Given the seriousness of the incident, Sarno's mayor, Francesco Squillante, immediately ordered the suspension of all Carnival events scheduled for the day. "This is a necessary decision," a statement reads, "to allow for all necessary investigations into the circumstances of the incident."
The competent authorities, including the Carabinieri, are already working to precisely reconstruct the causes of the collapse and determine any responsibilities. Investigations will focus on both the structure of the float and the methods used to assemble and secure the figures.
