Casagiove – The fake badge, the excuse of checking the boiler, and then the escape with the loot. It seemed like the usual hideous scenario of a scam targeting seniors, but the two criminals' plans collided with the sense of duty of a Carabiniere who, despite not being on duty, didn't look the other way.
The ploy of the "fake technicians"
The incident occurred yesterday evening, February 18, in the heart of Casagiove. Two young men—a 25-year-old from Sant'Anastasia and a 27-year-old from Caivano (already known to law enforcement)—managed to break into the home of an 81-year-old man.
Pretending to be employees of a gas company, they distracted the elderly man, managing to grab a purse and quickly disappear from the apartment.
The providential intervention
Their escape, however, lasted only a few meters. At the time, the Commander of the Castel Morrone Carabinieri Station was near the residence. Despite being off duty, the Marshal noticed the two individuals exiting the front door cautiously and suspiciously quickening their pace.
Trusting his instincts, the non-commissioned officer intervened immediately, blocking the two's path and alerting his colleagues at the Casagiove Station for operational support.
The patrol, arriving on the scene within moments, proceeded with the search. Inside the suspects' vehicle, they found the recently stolen purse, containing medication and a few dozen euros. The stolen items were immediately returned to the 81-year-old, who was still shaken by the incident.
The two accomplices were arrested on charges of aggravated theft. They are currently being held by the judicial authorities awaiting a fast-track trial.

It's a sobering episode that shows how certain situations may seem normal but are actually very dangerous. It's important to remain vigilant and not let your guard down, especially for older people who may be more vulnerable.
