Another workplace disaster has rocked the Campania region. Nicola Iezza, 58, originally from Pompeii, lost his life this morning while working on the construction site of the water treatment tunnel for the Campolattaro dam, in the municipality of Casalduni, in the province of Benevento.

According to initial reports, the man fell from a concrete spraying machine, an impact that left him with no chance of survival despite the immediate alarm raised by his colleagues.

The alarm and first aid

The tragedy occurred around 10:30 a.m. Workers on the construction site heard the crash and immediately called 118, but paramedics arrived at the scene and could only confirm the 58-year-old's death.

Carabinieri officers from the Ponte station promptly arrived at the scene of the tragedy to conduct routine surveys and begin the investigations necessary to reconstruct the exact circumstances of the accident, attempting to determine whether all safety regulations set out in the construction site plan had been respected.

The investigations and the autopsy

The Benevento Public Prosecutor's Office has opened an investigation, entrusted to Public Prosecutor Marilia Capitanio. Nicola Iezza's body has been transferred to the morgue of the San Pio Hospital in Benevento, where an autopsy will be performed next week. The task has been entrusted to coroner Emilio D'Oro, who has already conducted an initial technical inspection of the accident area. Currently, the machinery and the affected portion of the construction site have been seized to allow for further technical investigations.

Checks on contractual regularity

In parallel with the military's investigation, the Labor Inspectorate has been activated to carry out its own investigations. Initial checks indicate that the victim's employment status appears to be regular: he was employed by the company responsible for the tunnel work. It now remains to be determined whether the machinery suffered a technical failure or whether the fall was caused by a tragic accident or a lack of personal protective equipment.
