Villa di Briano – The past returns with the force of metal and gunpowder in the Aversa countryside. This morning, Thursday, February 26, 2026, a quiet plot of land on Via Kruscev became the scene of a delicate security operation. It was around 11:00 a.m. when a 36-year-old resident, while carrying out some work on his property, stumbled upon a metallic object of unmistakable shape: a hand grenade dating back to the Second World War.
The alarm and immediate intervention
After the discovery, the man immediately alerted the authorities via the single emergency number 112. The Carabinieri of the Frignano Station, coordinated by the Aversa Company, promptly intervened on the scene.
Once the nature of the find had been ascertained, the military identified the device: it was a Mk2, the famous fragmentation grenade produced in the United States, nicknamed “Pineapple” by soldiers of the time due to its particular external serrations.
Safety and cleanup procedures
The area was promptly cordoned off. The Carabinieri established a security perimeter to protect residents and prevent access to the farmland. Following standard protocol for the discovery of war material, the following were notified:
The Prefecture of Caserta, for the coordination of civil operations.
The Tenth Infrastructure Department of the Italian Army in Naples, which will send specialized bomb disposal experts to the site.
The device remains under constant surveillance. In the coming hours, experts from the Army Corps of Engineers will evaluate whether to remove the grenade and transport it to a safe quarry or conduct a controlled detonation directly on site. Although more than eighty years have passed since the conflict, such relics often retain their offensive potential intact, requiring the utmost caution and technical precision.
