Nola – The driver of a Ford Fiesta who the other evening violently rear-ended the Mercedes A-Class carrying Antonio Cianciullo, 65, and Teresa Di Lanno, 61, a couple originally from Marano di Napoli but resident in Sorrento, is under investigation for vehicular homicide.
A new dramatic road accident adds to the list of road deaths at the beginning of 2026. The latest tragedy occurred along the A16 Naples-Canosa motorway, near Nola late on Saturday evening.
The dynamics of the impact
According to an initial reconstruction carried out by Highway Police officers, the Mercedes was travelling towards Naples when it was struck from behind by the Ford Fiesta, which was also heading towards the Campania capital.
Following the violent impact, the couple's car struck the New Jersey barrier separating the lanes, overturning several times. The couple was apparently thrown from the vehicle on impact.
Useless rescue efforts
Antonio Cianciullo and Teresa Di Lanno died instantly. Rescue efforts, initiated by the Ford driver himself, were unsuccessful. When paramedics and highway police arrived, the victims' bodies lay lifeless on the asphalt.
The driver of the Ford Fiesta was immediately subjected to a breathalyzer test. He has been charged with vehicular homicide. He is currently under investigation and at large.
The investigations
The investigation has been entrusted to the Avellino West Highway Police, responsible for that stretch of highway. Officers are currently reviewing surveillance camera footage to reconstruct the exact sequence of events surrounding the accident, which occurred near the Caserta-Salerno interchange, in the municipality of Nola.
The bodies of the two victims have been transferred to the Policlinico Hospital in Naples, where an autopsy will be performed.
A well-known and esteemed couple
Antonio Cianciullo and Teresa Di Lanno, husband and wife, were a well-known and well-respected couple. Numerous messages of condolence and sympathy have been sent to their children Sara and Leopoldo and other family members.
Antonio, 65, worked as a laborer for a company in Naples and was nearing retirement. He had moved to Sorrento many years ago with his parents and siblings. Teresa, 61, originally from Marano di Napoli, was a leader of the grassroots union.
