Naples continues to be under the scrutiny of law enforcement. In the past few hours, Carabinieri officers from the Naples Central Company have completed a massive sweep of checks involving some of the city's liveliest nightlife and commercial areas, with a particular focus on the Chiaia bar district and the historic center.

The operation, conducted with the assistance of specialists from the Naples Local Health Authority (ASL) and Enel, revealed a varied pattern of irregularities, with dozens of fines and several outstanding complaints.

Widespread inspections of nightlife venues

The military's main targets were restaurants and entertainment businesses. A total of four bars, restaurants, and nightclubs were inspected. The support of local health authority staff, who found serious hygiene deficiencies in several establishments, was crucial.

For these violations, as many as 9 administrative fines were imposed, demonstrating constant attention to food safety and public health.

The "dirty network" of illegality: illegal electricity connections

Alongside administrative and health inspections, attention was also focused on energy consumption. Thanks to collaboration with Enel technicians, the Carabinieri uncovered a veritable "dirty network" of illegal activity.

Tampering and unauthorized connections to electricity meters have been discovered at several businesses. Five people have been charged with aggravated electricity theft, a practice that, in addition to being a crime, poses a serious threat to public safety.

Roadside checks: drugs, weapons, and illegal parking attendants

While part of the unit was engaged in inspections, another large group of officers patrolled the area. The results of this activity were equally significant: 145 people were identified and 45 vehicles were checked, six of which were seized or administratively detained. Twenty-nine traffic violations were reported.

Attention was also focused on drug dealing and petty crime. Four people were fined for being in possession of small quantities of narcotics for personal use. Two individuals were charged with more serious offences after being caught with an illegally held knife.

Finally, the operation also targeted the problem of illegal parking attendants, a scourge that particularly affects central and nightlife areas. Three individuals were identified, fined, and reported for illegal parking. This action by the Carabinieri heralds the beginning of a series of interventions aimed at restoring law and safety in the city.

It's good that law enforcement is carrying out checks, but I wonder if it's enough. The violations detected are numerous, and I don't know if fines alone will be enough to solve Naples' public safety problem.
