An area transformed into an illegal landfill, industrial processing without the necessary permits, and irregular waste management. This is the result of an operation conducted by the Carabinieri in Marcianise, in the heart of the so-called Land of Fires, where enforcement efforts to combat environmental crimes continue.
Officers from the local station, supported by the Carabinieri Forestry Unit, reported a thirty-one-year-old businessman, owner of a metalwork business, at large. The operation is part of a targeted effort to combat crimes that threaten the local area and public health.
During inspections within the industrial area, the Carabinieri reportedly identified an area used as an unauthorized landfill, with a buildup of approximately five cubic meters of hazardous and non-hazardous waste, some of it mixed with municipal solid waste. This situation is considered particularly serious due to the potential for environmental contamination.
Not only that, the investigations also revealed ferrous metal processing carried out without the required permits for atmospheric emissions, as well as the failure to keep waste loading and unloading records, which are required to properly track disposal.
At the conclusion of the operation, the area and the affected premises were placed under criminal seizure. The entrepreneur was also fined €6.700 and had his driving license suspended. The judicial authorities have been informed of the results of the inspections. The activity is part of a broader environmental monitoring plan implemented by the Carabinieri to curb pollution and illegal dumping in an area already plagued by years of environmental emergencies.

The laws exist, but those who should enforce them often fail to do so. Perhaps more regular checks are needed to prevent similar incidents from happening again, otherwise things will only get worse.
That's true, but sometimes authorities don't have enough resources to carry out effective controls, and this leads to abusive situations that harm citizens' health and the local environment.
The article talks about a serious situation, but I wonder how it's possible that these things can happen without anyone noticing, and the fines always seem too low for the damage caused to the environment.
