A report of a man armed with a gun turned yesterday evening into a tense moment in Piazza Principe Umberto, near Piazza Garibaldi. After a daring chase and a scuffle, the State Police arrested an 18-year-old Egyptian man with an illegal immigration status.
The race and the fight
It all started when a call to 113 raised the alarm: an armed youth was lurking menacingly in the square. Officers from the Vicaria-Mercato Police Station immediately arrived on the scene. Upon seeing the police, the 18-year-old attempted to flee, quickly throwing away a machete in an attempt to throw investigators off the scent.
The police reacted immediately: after a brief chase and a fierce fight, the young man was arrested.
The seized weapons
The search revealed the gravity of the situation. The boy was in possession of an 8mm replica pistol, made dangerously realistic by the lack of a red cap and the magazine loaded with four blank cartridges. The officers later recovered the machete, clearly of military design, which he had thrown away during the escape.
At the end of the operation, the 18-year-old was arrested on serious charges of carrying weapons (both the replica pistol and the machete) and resisting arrest. The operation confirms the State Police's constant focus on territorial control and preventing incidents of urban violence in one of the city's most sensitive areas.

I don't understand how a young man could have access to such weapons. Law enforcement must be more vigilant and intervene before these serious things happen. The situation is truly alarming.
It's unacceptable that a young man of only eighteen is found walking around with a gun, even a replica. This situation highlights the need for greater controls and security in public squares and areas; it's worrying.
