A man serving a life sentence for mafia-related activities related to the bloody Gela massacre of November 27, 1990, has filed a request for a retrial.
The man, whose identity is closely linked to the Madonia clan, has been detained continuously since 1990, with his sentence becoming final in 1993.
Although he is no longer under the harsh 41bis prison regime, he is being held in Parma prison. He is represented by criminal lawyer Massimo Viscusi, an expert in defending life prisoners and those in high-security prisons.
The night that bloodied Gela
As you may recall, what became known as the "arcade massacre" was an unprecedented and meticulously coordinated sequence of violence, unfolding in just a few minutes late at night. A veritable act of mafia warfare, it began at 7:00 PM on Tuesday, November 27, 1990, targeting a gang of child extortionists working for Giuseppe "Piddu" Madonia's clan, but it also claimed a number of entirely accidental victims.
The four ambushes, a massacre
First blood on Corso Vittorio EmanueleThe first attack took place in an arcade on the central Corso Vittorio Emanuele. Within moments, two people were murdered and six injured. A third young man, attempting to escape, was killed on the opposite sidewalk. They were all affiliated with the extortionist group linked to the Madonia family.
Via Tevere, the massacre at the stallAt 7:07 PM, while Carabinieri and ambulances rushed to the Corso, the second ambush occurred. On Via Tevere, in front of a fruit and vegetable stand owned by criminals linked to the clan, there were already three bodies and five injured. Two of the victims had no criminal record and happened to be there.
The final blowsThe final two ambushes took place between 7:15 and 7:18 PM. A man was killed in front of a butcher's shop on Via Venezia, a few hundred meters from the second ambush. Shortly thereafter, near the monumental cemetery (Via V25), the eighth victim fell: a man with no criminal record, killed solely because he was the brother-in-law of members of the Madonia clan.
The basics for review
The conviction was based on the testimony of several eyewitnesses and, subsequently, of new collaborators of justice. The defense of the lifer, entrusted to the lawyer Viscusi, is now leveraging the provisions introduced after his trial and focusing on new evidence that has emerged.
These, according to the defense, would offer new legal parameters for reexamining the evidence and procedural procedures that led to the final verdict, paving the way for a possible review. A new judicial chapter for one of the darkest pages of Sicilian crime.
