Femicides in Naples are on the rise: they've doubled in a year.

The Attorney General's Office raises alarm: cases of gender-based violence are rising, and the ages of victims and perpetrators are decreasing. In the district, over 9 cases have been filed, with ten women killed in 2025. This is the picture painted at the opening of the judicial year.

Gender-based violence remains one of the most serious emergencies in the Naples judicial district. Attorney General Aldo Policastro, speaking at the inauguration ceremony of the judicial year, sounded the alarm, describing the situation as "alarming not only in terms of numbers, but also due to the decreasing age of both victims and perpetrators."

The numbers: over 9 proceedings and 10 femicides

Data from the past year confirms the severity of the phenomenon: in the Naples district, 9.109 cases were registered for gender-based violence—including mistreatment, stalking, and sexual assault—a figure essentially stable compared to 2024. Of particular concern is the number of femicides: ten in total, double the previous year.

North Naples under pressure, heavy traffic also in the capital

The situation is particularly critical at the North Naples Prosecutor's Office, which has 2.169 pending cases. In the capital, the Naples Prosecutor's Office—the largest in the district—registered 5.765 cases involving a known perpetrator and a female victim between September 2024 and August 2025.

In the same period, over 5.400 were defined and more than 414 precautionary measures were requested, approximately 300 of which were custodial.

Minors involved: the most disturbing fact

Further cause for alarm comes from the Juvenile Prosecutor's Office, which has registered 187 cases of gender-based violence, 51 of which are for sexual assault. "Our thoughts," Policastro emphasized, "can only turn to the tragic end of Martina Carbonaro, just fourteen years old," a symbol of a phenomenon affecting increasingly younger age groups.

The increase in the first half of 2025

This trend is also confirmed by the report by Maria Rosaria Covelli, President of the Court of Appeal of Naples. In the first half of 2025, there were 1.314 new proceedings for gender-based violence, while 2.176 were concluded, an increase of 48,81% and 28,53%, respectively, compared to the same period in 2024.

The work of the judiciary

"These numbers," Policastro concluded, "speak to the enormous work done by prosecutors and judges, called upon to operate under increasingly tight deadlines and with great sacrifice, to minimize the toll paid by female victims of violence."

The gender violence situation in Naples is truly worrying, but I don't understand why there are so many proceedings pending and the authorities are unable to resolve the problem effectively and promptly. I hope something is done.
