Fondi– He didn't even have time to enjoy his loot. A 37-year-old man, resident in the province of Naples, was arrested on charges of aggravated fraud after robbing two women in Fondi.
The man, who had pretended to be a high-ranking officer of the Carabinieri, was intercepted by the Carabinieri of the local station while trying to disappear along the provincial road to Lenola.
The staging: "You are involved in a robbery"
The plan was sparked by a tense phone call. The 37-year-old, posing as the Commander of the Fondi station, contacted a 90-year-old woman and her 66-year-old daughter, convincing them that their car had been used in a jewelry store robbery.
Under the pretext of needing to "verify" the provenance of their savings and valuables, the criminal announced the imminent arrival of a soldier at their home.
Shortly thereafter, the self-styled Carabiniere showed up at the door. The two women, confused and frightened, handed him €2.000 in cash and approximately 135 grams of gold. Only after the man fled in a rental car did the victims realize the ruse and alert 112.
The pursuit and recovery of the stolen goods
The military's response (the real ones) was immediate. A patrol intercepted the fugitive just as he was trying to dispose of the stolen goods on the way to Lenola. During the search, in addition to the gold and cash just stolen, a counterfeit 50-euro note was also discovered.
The check yielded further surprises: the scammer was driving the rental vehicle without ever having obtained a license. For this reason, in addition to the criminal charges, the vehicle was seized and subjected to a hefty fine.
A carbon copy hit a few days earlier
The rapid investigation conducted after the arrest linked the 37-year-old to another similar incident. On January 27, another elderly woman from Fondi (83) fell into the same trap, handing over several gold jewelry to the criminal.
The entire loot recovered yesterday has already been returned to the two women, while the man is now at the disposal of the Judicial Authorities.
