Nola – Canale 21, Campania's historic private television station, will broadcast live the funeral of Domenico Caliendo, the two-and-a-half-year-old boy who died yesterday morning at the Monaldi Hospital in Naples after nearly two months of agony following a failed heart transplant.
The initiative, announced in an official statement, was born "as a sign of sympathy for the profound grief that has struck the community" and has the sole purpose of "allowing those who cannot be present to join in the family's and the entire country's moment of reflection and prayer."
The rite in the Cathedral of Nola
The funeral will be held in the Cathedral of Nola, Domenico's hometown. The exact date has not yet been set: the rite can only take place after the autopsy has been ordered, but according to sources close to the Curia, it is expected to take place sometime this weekend, between Thursday, February 26th and Friday, February 27th. Where to watch the live broadcast: The broadcast will be available on digital terrestrial channel 10 in Campania.

The case of little Domenico has deeply shocked national public opinion. The child, hospitalized since December, had received a heart from Bolzano, but it was severely damaged during transport (due to the use of dry ice at -80°C, which compromised its viability).
After the surgery, the child remained connected to an ECMO in intensive care for 59 days, without the transplanted organ functioning. The Naples Public Prosecutor's Office has opened an investigation into manslaughter (and, according to some civil party lawyers, even more serious charges), investigating seven doctors from the pediatric cardiac surgery team at Monaldi Hospital.
The family, assisted by lawyer Francesco Petruzzi, has announced the establishment of a foundation named after Domenico to raise awareness of the safety of pediatric transplants. By broadcasting the funeral, Canale 21 reflects the widespread grief in Campania and beyond, offering a platform for sharing the grief of a family and an entire community.

I'm sorry for the family and for the little one, but the news seems to have been written in too much haste and many things remain unclear. The news broadcasting the funeral can help those who cannot be there, but it can also seem intrusive. The causes, the autopsy and the responsibilities should be explained better, first of all.
