Liternum Gardens in Giugliano, from a promised rebirth to decay: the site has been excluded from tourist itineraries.

Giugliano – Walking through many public spaces in the province of Naples today brings to mind places that formally exist but are devoid of life. There's no shortage of facilities or spaces, just a lack of maintenance: a fleeting presence that seems to vanish immediately after the inaugural ceremonies, leaving behind decay and neglect.

Children are the ones who pay the highest price. Numerous playgrounds, which should provide safe and inclusive spaces, appear compromised by rust, overgrown vegetation, and unusable equipment. But the problem goes far beyond playground equipment: it affects sites of historical and archaeological importance, depriving the area of opportunities for cultural and economic development.

The Liternum Gardens in Giugliano in Campania are a prime example. Presented in 2024 as the flagship of the local cultural revival and a tribute to the memory of Scipio Africanus, they were intended to be a new tourist attraction. Just a few months later, the reality is diametrically opposed.

Despite formal reports, certified emails, and requests for intervention from citizens, the area has remained unmanaged. The consequences are severe: the site has been excluded from regional tourist itineraries, with damage that impacts not only the local economy but also the community's cultural identity.

Francesco Emilio Borrelli, MP for the Green and Left Alliance, intervened in the matter, collecting residents' complaints. "We are tired of seeing public funds spent on projects that are abandoned immediately after the ribbon-cutting," he said. "Liternum is not a private property, but a collective heritage. It is unacceptable that a site of this value be reduced to a wasteland."

Borrelli is now demanding concrete answers and formal commitments: "We demand clarity on this devastation. We will not rest until guaranteed funding for maintenance is secured and until the Liternum Gardens regain their rightful place in cultural and tourist circuits."
