Giugliano – Yet another brutal attack and violence against women has brought another serious incident to the province of Naples. It occurred last night in a parking lot on the Asse Mediano highway, in the municipality of Giugliano in Campania.

According to initial reports, at the height of a violent argument that broke out in the car, the man—originally from Pozzuoli and in his thirties—slashed his partner repeatedly with a knife as she tried to escape. The blows struck her legs and back.

The condition of the victim

Quickly assisted by emergency medical services, the woman was transported in serious condition to the Pineta Grande Hospital in Castel Volturno. There, she underwent emergency surgery for her injuries. The operation was a success: the patient is alive and currently under observation for post-operative monitoring.

The attacker attempted suicide

The man was taken by medical personnel and police to Aversa Hospital, where he received treatment for a stab wound to the chest and a wound to the hand, both believed to be self-inflicted. Both wounds were stitched without significant consequences. He likely attempted suicide after realizing the gravity of his actions. The attacker works as a social health worker (OSS) in the emergency room of Cardarelli Hospital in Naples.

The police are reconstructing the exact events and determining criminal liability. No details have been released yet regarding the identities of the two suspects or any prior criminal history between them.

The surge in violence against women: an emergency that shows no signs of abating.

This serious episode of violence occurs within an alarming national context. Despite awareness campaigns, appeals from associations, the introduction of the specific crime of femicide in the Criminal Code (approved in 2025), and national strategic plans, the phenomenon of gender-based violence remains structural and persistent.

According to data from the Ministry of the Interior for 2025, femicides decreased by 18% compared to 2024 (97 victims versus 118), with an overall decrease in voluntary homicides.

However, the Non Una di Meno Observatory monitored 84 femicides over the course of the year, with a very high percentage (around 80-85%) committed within the family or romantic context by partners, exes, or relatives.

Numerous recent cases have involved the use of bladed weapons, often following domestic disputes or attempted separations. Reports and requests for help to the 1522 helpline remain high, a sign that the perception of danger is widespread, but the safety net (anti-violence centers, electronic bracelets, precautionary measures) still has significant gaps.

Experts and associations emphasize that the slight decline in numbers does not erase the endemic nature of the problem, rooted in dynamics of ownership and control: more effective interventions in prevention, education, and concrete support for victims are needed to ensure the surge continues.
