Giugliano – What was supposed to be a return to normalcy has, in just a few weeks, turned into a daily threat. There's no peace on the road between Via Appia and Via Carlo Pisacane in Giugliano.

After years of disruption due to construction work on the EAV sewer system, the reopening of the road sections at the end of 2025 hasn't brought the hoped-for relief. Instead, motorists and residents today find themselves navigating an obstacle course that evokes scenes of total degradation.

Slalom between sinkholes and risk of head-on collisions

The images from residents' video complaints are unmistakable: the road surface of Via Appia, a key artery connecting Sant'Antimo and Aversa, is literally littered with deep craters. The rains of recent days have transformed these potholes into invisible, water-filled hazards, forcing drivers to take emergency maneuvers.

To protect the safety of vehicles, traffic is moving at a crawl, with sudden braking and dangerous oncoming lanes. The risk of head-on collisions is now a constant, while on Via Pisacane the situation is no different: here, the asphalt appears to have literally crumbled, giving way to a vast expanse of mud and debris that makes even pedestrian traffic precarious.

The political attack: "Work done poorly"

MP Francesco Emilio Borrelli and regional councilor Carlo Ceparano (Green-Left Alliance) have spoken out forcefully on the issue, having already raised doubts about the stability of the new asphalt in January.

"We are facing yet another disgrace," AVS representatives stated. "The work performed appears to fail to meet minimum quality standards. It is unacceptable that, after years of inconvenience and the use of significant public funds, the community is being given dangerous roads in return." Borrelli and Ceparano then emphasized the technical responsibilities: "Who inspected these works? Why wasn't the company fined and forced to perform proper repairs? Every euro wasted is a slap in the face to the dignity of the citizens."

Citizens ready to mobilize

Residents report ongoing damage to suspension and tires, but the primary concern remains physical safety. "The real danger is the constant slalom between lanes," road users complain. The political and civil battle is just beginning: the goal is to push the Municipality of Giugliano and the relevant authorities to take decisive action, to prevent what has been dubbed the "eternal construction site" from definitively turning into a death trap for the area.

It's very sad to see how the road conditions in Giugliano haven't improved after all this work. Potholes are dangerous and cause damage to cars, but above all, they can cause very serious accidents. More attention is needed.
