Naples – Bulldozers have entered into action in Ponte Riccio, in the municipality of Giugliano in Campania, to remove one of the most tragic symbols of the Land of Fires.

Disposal operations for waste that has been illegally accumulated for decades in an area plagued by environmental mafias have officially begun, offering a sign of hope to a region struggling for its environmental rebirth.

The project, which is part of the national operational plan coordinated by the Sole Commissioner for Bank Transfers, General Giuseppe Vadalà, includes a specific allocation of over 2,3 million euros.

Bulldozers are hard at work removing tons of waste, at a site that is becoming a testing ground for a broader program involving 17 priority areas in the provinces of Naples and Caserta, for a total investment of several million euros.

A result described as "important" by civic committees, who have been on the front lines of local governance for years. "This intervention is a significant achievement, but we cannot afford to let our guard down," says Raffaele Pacilio of the Kosmos Committee.

"The Land of Fires is not a thing of the past, but a wound that is still open. We demand continuous monitoring and serious, transparent planning. Committees and associations must be involved in decision-making processes, because we are the first bastions protecting everyone's health."

On the institutional front, Ciro Buonajuto, regional councilor and president of the Campania First Commission, is taking action. He will be inspecting Ponte Riccio in the coming days. "What began today must be just the first in a long series of interventions aimed at protecting the territory and public health," Buonajuto stated.

"Environmental outrages like the Land of Fires must never happen again. I will meet with the committees to establish a stable collaborative relationship with the Campania Region, involving departments and commissions to build a shared, effective, and long-lasting program for the complete remediation of the areas devastated by illegal waste disposal."

It's important that the bulldozers are in action, but in my opinion, it's not enough to solve all the waste problems. We need constant commitment and a real long-term strategy to ensure the well-being of the community.
