Naples – This morning on the A16 Naples-Canosa motorway, between the Avellino and Benevento toll booths, a tourist bus with 37 people on board suddenly caught fire in its engine compartment.
The vehicle, which left Naples around 9:00 am, began to exhibit mechanical problems with obvious sparks coming from the muffler.
The driver promptly pulled over to the emergency lay-by and disembarked all passengers. The tour bus stopped in the lay-by outside the Avellino toll booth, reporting only a breakdown. There was no fire, and everything was resolved within half an hour, just enough time to transfer the passengers to another bus. Autostrade per l'Italia clarified this regarding this morning's incident on the A16.
Fortunately, none of the 37 occupants – presumably including Italian and foreign tourists – were injured.

The news of this accident is deeply disturbing. It's incredible how a bus could burst into flames so suddenly. We hope the authorities can clarify the causes and prevent similar incidents in the future.
