A fire has affected the former Salid area in Salerno, a site where masks dating back to the Covid emergency were stored. The blaze has brought to the fore a previously reported situation involving materials accumulated in an area considered environmentally sensitive and in need of safety measures.
Regional Environment Councilor Claudia Pecoraro intervened in the matter, ensuring constant monitoring of the situation. "Regarding the fire that affected the former Salid area in Salerno, where masks dating back to the Covid emergency were stored, I am personally and closely monitoring the situation, in coordination with ARPAC and other public health and environmental protection agencies," she stated.
The councilor described the incident as "serious," emphasizing how it highlights "a long-standing and never-resolved critical issue related to the presence and management of accumulated materials in an area requiring protection and safety." This situation, she added, "requires responsibility, clarity, and concrete action."
Investigations are already underway to clarify the origin of the fire and assess any potential impacts on the environment and public health. "The necessary investigations are underway, including environmental ones, to determine the causes of the fire and assess any potential consequences. It is essential that maximum transparency be ensured in this matter and that decisive action be taken to secure the area, overcoming its current state of neglect," Pecoraro explained.
Thanks were also extended to the emergency responders involved in the operation. "I would like to sincerely thank the firefighters for their timely intervention and professionalism, which allowed us to contain the fire and prevent more serious consequences for people and the surrounding area," said the councilor, extending her gratitude to the ARPAC technicians who were involved in the initial sampling and air quality monitoring.
The Region assures that close attention will remain high in the coming days, with updates on the situation and the results of environmental assessments. The issue of managing and remediating areas where materials related to the emergency have accumulated over the years will once again be a priority.
