Ischia in the grip of bad weather: coasts battered by storm surges, hydrofoils halted.

A violent "ponenata" (southerly wind) has been battering the island for over 48 hours. The Maronti walkways were damaged, and traffic in Forio and Casamicciola was disrupted. Maritime connections were precarious: high-speed vessels remained at the dock, while ships braved very high waves.

Ischia – A veritable siege of water and wind. For over two days, the island of Ischia has been hostage to a massive wave of severe weather, with a storm surge that is severely testing coastal infrastructure and the patience of residents and commuters. Strong winds from the western quadrants (third and fourth) have created massive waves, an extraordinary "ponenata" that is hitting the exposed slopes of the municipalities of Forio and Barano with particular force.

Critical issues on the Forian coast

The most noticeable disruption is along the Forio coastline. The fury of the elements struck the Bay of San Francesco, where the administration was forced to close a stretch of pedestrian road for safety reasons.

The situation is similar at Citara Bay and along the scenic Via Giovanni Mazzella: here the waves crash against the cliff with unprecedented violence, pushing the seawater all the way onto the road.

The severe weather has not spared the Chiaia area and the port area. Strong gusts and rough seas have swamped the roadway, depositing sand and debris that are making traffic difficult, while the waves are dangerously battering the docks of the Forio port.

Damage to the Maronti and traffic at risk

The situation doesn't improve as we move south. At Maronti Bay (Barano), the force of the sea has taken its toll. As documented in the images released by Eugenio Di Meglio, the waves have torn away and virtually destroyed part of the wooden walkway that runs along the beach, inflicting significant damage to the beach facilities.

Even on the northern side, in Casamicciola Terme, the coastal highway is under siege: the sea is crashing violently against the retaining walls, spilling onto the asphalt and creating potential dangers for motorists.

High water and the transport odyssey

In the capital city of Ischia, high water continues to cause flooding and disruption in Piazzale Aragonese, along the Riva Destra, and in Via Iasolino, the heart of port traffic.

And it's precisely on the maritime transport front that the most difficult challenge is being played out. Hydrofoils are grounded, stranded in port by the harsh sea conditions. Territorial continuity with the mainland is guaranteed exclusively by ferries, which nevertheless face countless difficulties.

The images filmed yesterday by Capri journalist Giuseppe Catuogno are revealing: a video showing a Caremar ferry engaged in a complex maneuver, at the mercy of rough seas that make every crossing a feat for crews and passengers.
