Vietri sul Mare – A bittersweet awakening for traffic on the Amalfi Coast. Since the early hours of this morning, Friday, February 6th, State Road 163 has been closed to traffic in both directions due to a landslide at kilometer 47,300, specifically in the Fuenti area, in the municipality of Vietri sul Mare.
The intervention and the deviations
Debris and muddy material falling from the slope above invaded the roadway, making it impossible for vehicles to pass. Anas and firefighters responded quickly to the scene to assess the extent of the damage and coordinate debris removal operations.
At the moment, road traffic has been diverted: for those who need to travel between Salerno and the municipalities of the Divine, the only viable alternative is the Valico di Chiunzi, with inevitable repercussions on travel times.
The issue of causes: the issue of private property
Today's hardship is merely the latest chapter in a well-known territorial fragility. The causes of this blockage can be traced back to two main factors:
Torrential rains: The intense rainfall that hit the province of Salerno during the night saturated the ground, triggering the landslide.
Maintenance of private slopes: As confirmed by initial surveys, the debris fell from a privately owned slope. This once again raises the question of responsibility for safety: the land bordering the state highway often fails to receive the necessary maintenance from its legitimate owners, exposing the public artery to constant risks with every bout of bad weather.
Inconvenience for residents
For residents of the Amalfi Coast, the closure of Fuenti means partial isolation. Students and commuters heading to Salerno or the A3 motorway are forced to take long, winding detours. Beyond the lengthening of journeys, concerns remain for the safety of the coast, perceived by residents as a "sword of Damocles" that daily threatens the only vital connection for the area's economy and social life.
