Massa di Somma – An afternoon of ordinary madness turned into a high-voltage chase through the streets of Massa di Somma. The escape of Salvatore Avagnano, a 28-year-old from Scampia, already known to law enforcement, ended in a crash and an arrest. He was intercepted by Carabinieri officers from the San Sebastiano al Vesuvio station in a recently stolen car.

The tailing and panic among passers-by

It all began when the military, engaged in a territorial patrol, noticed a suspicious Jeep Renegade wandering the streets of the Vesuvian municipality.

On board were Avagnano and an accomplice. Upon seeing the patrol, the two hit the accelerator in a desperate attempt to disappear. A brief but violent chase ensued, causing panic among motorists in the city traffic at the time.

The clash and the fight

The Jeep's journey ended abruptly when the driver, attempting to make his way through, struck a Chevrolet Matiz driven by a woman. After impacting the small car, the SUV ended its journey, crashing into a fence.

The two criminals then attempted to flee on foot: although the accomplice managed to escape, the Carabinieri caught up with Avagnano. A struggle ensued, after which the 28-year-old was apprehended and handcuffed.

Hi-tech for car theft

Following the search, the officers discovered a disturbing detail about the criminals' professionalism: Avagnano was in possession of an advanced electronic device used to bypass and tamper with the electronic control units of latest-generation cars, facilitating their theft in a matter of moments.

The toll of the injured

The physical injuries were severe. The woman aboard the Matiz was taken to the hospital, where doctors diagnosed her with injuries that will heal within 30 days. One of the Carabinieri officers who responded also suffered minor injuries, but was given a five-day prognosis due to the arrestee's resistance.

The 28-year-old, who faces charges of aggravated theft and resisting arrest, is currently awaiting trial. Meanwhile, the Carabinieri are continuing their investigations at a rapid pace to identify and locate the evading accomplice.

Yes, it's truly strange that someone would think of running away like that without worrying about the consequences. Safety should be a priority for all of us, and accidents like this shouldn't happen.

The chase through the streets of Massa di Somma was a truly unexpected event. I don't understand how such insane situations can arise, especially with the police present. It's worrying.
