Torre del Greco – Yesterday, the NAS Carabinieri ordered the immediate closure of the canteen at the Maresca hospital in Torre del Greco, where meals for patients and healthcare workers were organized, stored, and distributed.

The measure was triggered following an inspection that revealed serious hygiene and health irregularities.

The irregularities found

During the inspection, the military found numerous violations of current food safety regulations. Specifically, the food was found to be improperly stored in a storage area that was neither authorized nor suitable for food handling and preparation.

Expired and unfit for consumption foods

During the inspection, the seizure and destruction of nearly 100 kilograms of food products was also ordered, which were found to be expired or in poor condition. These foods, it was determined, were intended for use in preparing meals for hospital patients.

The gravity of the context

The incident is particularly alarming because it concerns a public healthcare facility, which by definition must ensure extremely high safety standards, especially for patients who are often fragile or immunocompromised. Proper management of the food supply chain in hospitals is, in fact, a crucial element in protecting public health.

Investigations in progress

The premises will remain closed until the hygiene and sanitation conditions required by law are restored, while further investigations are underway to identify any culprits in the management of the canteen service.
