A microcell phone complete with a SIM card was discovered inside a cell at the Nisida juvenile detention center. The device was hidden in a cigarette pack and was seized during a search conducted by the Penitentiary Police.
The discovery during a search
The operation was announced by the Autonomous Union of Penitentiary Police (SAPPE), through the Campania regional deputy coordinator for juvenile justice, Sabatino De Rosa.
The discovery was made yesterday morning thanks to an action described as "brilliant" by the union, which underlines the attention and professionalism of the officers serving at the Neapolitan juvenile detention center.
Not an isolated episode
According to the SAPPE, the young man whose cell phone was seized is not new to such incidents. In a previous search, another cell phone had already been found on the same inmate, a sign—according to the union—of repeated behavior and persistent violations of internal rules.
The union's request: "Evaluate dismissal."
In light of the recidivism, the SAPPE is asking the management of the Nisida IPM to evaluate "every useful initiative" to remove the boy from the facility. This measure, according to De Rosa, would serve to send a clear signal to other inmates and reaffirm respect for the rules within the institution.
“Critical issues in the re-education process”
The union is taking this opportunity to raise a broader issue. "It's now clear," De Rosa concludes, "that the re-education program touted by the chain of command presents serious critical issues," adding that even the semi-free section "seems to have lost its function," fueling concerns about the true effectiveness of the rehabilitation system within the Nisida juvenile detention center.
