Naples – The clinical condition of little Domenico, the two-year-old from Nola who underwent a delicate heart transplant last December 23, has further deteriorated.
Over the past twelve hours, his clinical condition has shown a "progressive and rapid" deterioration, according to a statement from the Colli Hospital. The child had received an organ that was later found to be damaged during surgery at the Monaldi Hospital in Naples.
The decision on treatment
Faced with the inexorable decline in vital functions, a dramatic but necessary decision was made. During a meeting held today, the Monaldi medical team, the young patient's mother, and the medical examiner Luca Scognamiglio, representing the family, agreed on a new treatment plan. The meeting is part of the Shared Care Planning (PCC) protocol.
Stop therapeutic obstinacy
The agreement stipulates that the child will be administered only "strictly life-saving therapies." At the same time, there will be a "progressive de-escalation" of the other therapeutic interventions currently underway. The hospital has proposed suspending all treatments that are no longer effective for Domenico's extremely serious clinical condition.
The primary objective of this painful decision, as specified in an official statement from the healthcare facility, is to "avoid the risk of excessive treatment" by providing the young patient with the greatest possible support during this phase, while respecting their dignity.
