Mondragone – An evening stroll turned into a nightmare for two young men from the Caserta hinterland. It happened yesterday evening, February 22nd, when a 17-year-old from Portico di Caserta and a 19-year-old from Macerata, Campania, were attacked and beaten by a group of their peers on Viale Europa, at the corner of Via Kennedy.

An episode of unprecedented and apparently unprovoked violence has once again put the spotlight on safety in the city center.

The sudden attack

According to initial reconstructions, the victims were walking calmly when they were approached and insulted by several young men they had never seen before. Within moments, the words escalated into physical violence: the gang surrounded the two youths, kicking and punching them, and then fled, disappearing before help could arrive.

Initial information gathered by investigators excludes any motive or provocation, outlining the profile of a gratuitous and cowardly attack.

Rescue and prognosis

The Mondragone Territorial Department and a 118 ambulance immediately responded to the scene. The 17-year-old, the most injured, was rushed to the emergency room of the Pineta Grande Hospital in Castel Volturno. Doctors treated him there and he was deemed recoverable within ten days.

After treatment, the boy, interviewed by the Carabinieri to reconstruct the incident, was released to his cohabiting father. The 19-year-old, however, did not require hospitalization.

Intensive investigations

The Carabinieri have launched immediate investigations to identify the gang members and determine their respective responsibilities. The alleged crime is conspiracy to cause personal injury. A key step in the investigation will be the acquisition and analysis of video surveillance images from the Viale Europa area.

The videos may have captured the attackers' faces or provided crucial information to reconstruct the exact circumstances of the incident. In the meantime, law enforcement has intensified its patrols in the area to prevent similar incidents of violence from recurring.
