New clarifications have been provided in the case of little Domenico, the two-year-and-four-month-old boy who died as a result of a heart transplant that was found to be damaged during the removal phase. Gennaro Razzino, the lawyer for Domenico, intervened. Joseph Limongelli, head of the Rare Cardiovascular Diseases Unit of theMonaldi Hospital, which firmly rejects any involvement of the doctor in the crucial phases of the operation at the centre of the investigation.
According to the statement, Limongelli "had no role in, nor did he receive any information from, the surgical team leaders and pediatric transplant follow-up" regarding the immediate pre-transplant phase, the surgery, and post-operative care. This complete exclusion from decisions and information, the lawyer emphasizes, made a drastic decision inevitable.
It was precisely this condition that "forced" the head physician to resign from his position as head of pre-surgical cardiology management, which he left on December 29th, six days after the December 23rd operation that marked the beginning of the dramatic deterioration in the child's condition. This decision, the lawyer explains, was based on professional consistency and the impossibility of continuing to hold a position without being informed of key stages of the clinical process.
The clarification also sheds light on the media hype surrounding the matter at the national and local levels. The lawyer openly discusses inaccurate reports and reiterates that Limongelli remains fully employed as head of the Monaldi Hospital's Rare Cardiovascular Diseases Unit, a role he continues to hold. The cardiologist, it is also noted, had been managing little Domenico's cardiac care until about a month before the transplant.
