Bolzano – The Bolzano hospital is not accepting the accusations surrounding Domenico's death and the failed heart transplant, and the Autonomous Province's Department of Health and Prevention responded with a report sent to the Ministry of Health on February 18. According to the South Tyrolean institution, the blame lies in the operational problems of the blood collection team from Naples.
The 59 minutes under accusation
It all happened in just under an hour: from 11:25 a.m. to 12:24 p.m. on December 23, during the surgical removal procedure. In those 59 minutes, according to the document sent to Rome, a series of problems arose that could be attributed to the Neapolitan team.
The most serious concerns the drainage: "insufficient during the perfusion phase", resulting in "massive congestion of the liver and heart", which required emergency corrective surgery by the Innsbruck team.
Inadequate material and questionable heparin management
That's not all. The report also points out "an incomplete technical provision": the necessary bags and containers would have been provided by the Innsbruck team and the operating room in Bolzano, to make up for the shortcomings of the Campania team.
Among the shortages is the refrigerant, a crucial detail in an operation of this nature. Added to this is "uncertainty regarding the administration of anticoagulation," specifically regarding the administration of heparin.
Dry ice and the magistrates' request
Investigators are focusing their attention on the refrigeration material—specifically, the so-called "dry ice" delivered by the Bolzano hospital to the Naples team. Prosecutors have asked the South Tyrolean hospital for the names of the medical personnel who actually supplied the material to the Neapolitan doctors, a step that could prove crucial in reconstructing the chain of responsibility.
The journey to Naples and the failed transplant
Once the operations were completed, the cardiac surgery team was transferred by Guardia di Finanza helicopter to Verona, and then by plane to Naples. However, the transplant outcome proved tragic: the confirmation from the Campania center did not arrive within the expected timeframe via the CNT (National Transplant Center), and initial information was contradictory. Only later was it announced that the heart, initially transplanted, had been subsequently removed due to primary organ dysfunction.
