Naples – Yet another attack on ATMs at banks and post offices occurred overnight in Naples. Around the early hours of the morning, Carabinieri from the Mobile Radio Unit responded to an ATM explosion at Via Domenico Minichino 14 in the Barra neighborhood.

According to initial reconstructions, unknown assailants detonated the ATM using the so-called "marmot" technique, a homemade explosive device inserted into the cash dispenser. The explosion damaged the ATM, but the criminals were unable to obtain the cash boxes. The heist, therefore, failed. No injuries were reported.

This is the second failed attempt in recent days, a sign of a resurgence of the phenomenon in the area.

Cars moved to block roads

To ensure their escape and slow down the arrival of the police, the perpetrators adopted a now consolidated strategy: some parked cars were forced and repositioned sideways to obstruct traffic on Corso Sirena and Corso Bruno Buozzi.

Not only that, but during their escape, the gang strewn the road with nails, attempting to damage any pursuing vehicles and gain precious time.

The “marmot”, a technique that has become a criminal fashion

The so-called Groundhog Gang continues to strike with increasingly audacious methods. The technique, which involves placing a small explosive device inside an ATM to defeat the security system and access the cash, has become a veritable trend in the predatory crime world in recent months.

A quick and devastating method, which causes extensive structural damage and puts the safety of residents at risk, but which in this case – as in the previous episode – yielded no loot.

The Carabinieri are conducting an investigation to precisely reconstruct the events of the attack and identify those responsible. They are examining video surveillance footage from the area and evidence collected on site.

It's worrying that these ATM robberies continue to happen. It seems no one can stop these criminal gangs who are using increasingly dangerous techniques. Let's hope law enforcement can resolve the situation before something more serious happens.
