Naples – A few steps from the National Archaeological Museum, in the arcades of the Galleria Principe di Napoli, a homeless man was robbed of his only bicycle. Surveillance camera footage captured the act of a man who, after carefully observing the victim's movements, took possession of the bicycle on the evening of February 9th.

The case, reported by the Green and Left Alliance MP Francesco Emilio Borrelli, rekindles the spotlight on the plight of homeless people in Naples' subways.

The shot on camera

The footage leaves no room for interpretation: the perpetrator wanders among the colonnades, carefully observes the situation, moves away for fear of being discovered, then returns to steal the only possessions of those sheltering within those columns. An act of pure looting committed in the shadows, just meters from one of the city's most important cultural centers. A citizen who viewed the video reported the theft to the MP, urging immediate action.

The parliamentarian's complaint

"Stealing from those who have nothing means being completely empty, devoid of values and soul," Borrelli declares. For the AVS deputy, the images don't just depict a crime, but "the failure of a shred of humanity." The appeal is addressed directly to those who commit similar acts against the most vulnerable, inviting them to "stop and reflect on what has become of this." A cry of indignation that underscores the incivility of an act that seems especially cowardly precisely because it was committed against those who have nothing.

Homeless Emergency: From Dormitories to Facilities

The case has forcefully reignited the debate over the plight of the homeless in Naples, particularly in the two large galleries: Principe and Umberto I. "Although these areas have become hubs for volunteers who bring food and blankets, we cannot accept that they remain makeshift camps," Borrelli continues.

For the MP, the situation is undignified, neither for those who live there nor for the urban decorum. He calls for moving beyond emergency assistance to "suitable structures and real integration pathways." What's needed, he concludes, is "an extraordinary reception plan that gets these people off the streets and restores their dignity, which a theft like this has sought to further trample."

This is truly a sad episode, but I wonder how it's possible that there are people who steal from those who have nothing. We should do more to help the homeless and not leave them at the mercy of events. This situation gives us pause for thought.
