Under the porticoes of Piazza Museo, a stone's throw from Naples' historic center, a scene of grave degradation unfolds every day: abandoned garbage bags, cardboard boxes, food scraps, and a persistent smell of urine and feces that makes the area nearly impassable for residents and passersby.

Clear deterioration and health and hygiene risk

According to reports from residents, the area has now become a hub for garbage accumulation and improper parking, with people using the porticos as outdoor toilets.

The constant presence of dirt and excrement raises serious health and hygiene concerns, as well as being a clear blot on the urban decorum in an area with heavy pedestrian traffic.

The request for intervention to the institutions

The residents and shopkeepers in the area are asking the competent authorities – the Municipality of Naples, Asia and the Municipal Police – for immediate extraordinary cleaning and sanitization intervention, together with more frequent checks and prevention measures, such as increased lighting, video surveillance and fines for those who abandon waste or use the porticos as latrines.

“We just want to be able to walk under the porticoes without holding our noses and without having to zigzag through the bags,” protest the residents, who are calling for a quick and concrete response.

Decorum and safety to restore livability

Restoring clean and safe conditions in Piazza Museo 1 is not just a matter of image, but also of protecting public health and respecting those who live, work, or pass through the area daily.

The hope is that the area will be reclaimed as soon as possible and that structural interventions will be implemented to prevent the degradation from recurring within a few weeks.

Every day, under the porticoes of Piazza Museo, a stone's throw from Naples' historic center, a scene of utter degradation can be seen: abandoned garbage bags, cardboard boxes, food scraps, and a lingering smell of filth and urine. Residents are calling for action, but so far nothing has been done, and the streetlights aren't working properly. More frequent checks are needed.
