The Teatro Sannazaro is no more. The historic Neapolitan theater was devastated by a violent fire that broke out in the early hours of the morning, leaving behind rubble and a severely damaged structure.
Giuseppe Paduano, commander of the Naples fire department, provided an initial, dramatic assessment: "The theater is no longer there; it's completely burned. When we arrived, the situation was already quite compromised. The entire stage was destroyed; the theater is completely damaged."
The intervention of the emergency services
Firefighters responded quickly, but by the time they arrived, flames had already engulfed much of the structure. The blaze particularly affected the stage and the scenic area, the heart of the theater's artistic activity.
Firefighting operations continued for hours. "Now we're shutting everything down and trying, as best we can, to get things back to normal. Then we'll see," Paduano explained, postponing any assessment of the causes until the emergency is over.
Investigations into the causes
The origin of the fire remains under wraps. Investigators have not ruled out accidental causes at this time, but they will need to wait until the fires are completely extinguished and the area is secured before starting technical investigations.
Some fires are still active in an apartment adjacent to the building. Only after the fire is completely contained will investigations begin to determine what started the blaze.
15 families evacuated
The emergency has also affected local residents. Fifteen families have been evacuated from the building adjacent to the theater. Two apartments are still affected by the fire, while firefighters are inspecting nearby homes to assess any structural damage and ensure safety.
The city has thus lost, at least for now, one of its most symbolic cultural assets. The next few hours will be crucial in clarifying the cause of the fire and assessing the extent of the damage to one of Naples' historic theaters.

It's very sad to know that the Teatro Sannazaro no longer exists; it was a symbol of Naples and its culture. We hope the authorities will thoroughly investigate the cause of the fire and that it can be rebuilt in the future.
