Naples – “They called me last night, around 4:00, telling me the situation was getting worse, because the ECMO machine was starting to slow down. I stayed until the very end, until the machine turned off. And that was it.”

Thus Patrizia Mercolino, speaking on "Mi manda Rai Tre," retraced the hours leading up to the death of her son Domenico, who died this morning at the Monaldi hospital in Naples.

Admission to intensive care after transplant

The child had been hospitalized in a coma since December 23rd in the intensive care unit. He had undergone a heart transplant, but the implanted organ was reportedly damaged. The child's already serious condition worsened, leading to his death in the past few hours.

“It must not be forgotten”: the foundation's announcement

Outside the Monaldi stadium, his mother announced her intention to create a foundation in her son's name. "My lawyer and I will soon announce this foundation I want to create in Domenico's name so we never forget him," she told reporters.

At the notary's on Monday: "I want to help other children."

Mercolino explained that he will formalize the process on Monday: "I'll go to the notary to sign a foundation in Domenico's name; my lawyer will handle it. I want to do this so Domenico won't be forgotten and to help other children. I want to leave a mark for my son."

Words on Tg1: "It's over"

A message also reiterated in an intervention on Tg1: “He's gone, he's finished.”
