Naples – In Piazza Cavour, the boundary between urban emergency and human collapse has long been crossed. What was once a vital hub has been transformed, amid the almost resigned indifference of the authorities, into a "no man's land" where life is tragically consumed on the point of a needle.
Chronicle of an abandonment foretold
The square's deterioration is not a new phenomenon, but in recent months it has taken on disturbing proportions. Illegal waste dumping, makeshift camps, and widespread petty crime paint a picture of an area that seems to have been erased from the maps of legality.
In this context, human suffering no longer makes the news, becoming an integral part of the urban landscape, to the astonished gaze of tourists and the impotent rage of residents.
The shameful video: "They kill each other in public"
The final piece of this mosaic of desperation comes from a video report sent on January 29 to the Green-Side Alliance MP, Francesco Emilio Borrelli.
The images are unmistakable: a middle-aged man, sitting calmly on a bench in broad daylight, injecting a dose of narcotics into his arm. Around him, the city's bustle continues unabated, a macabre normalization of social decay.
"The images are horrifying," Borrelli harshly comments. "They show the stark reality of a square transformed into a hub of despair. It's a public suicide celebrated amidst widespread indifference, an intolerable insult to our civilization, just steps from the city's main tourist attractions."
The appeal: "We need a humane cleanup."
According to the AVS deputy, Piazza Cavour has become a veritable "free zone" for the dealing and consumption of hard drugs, where homeless people and drug addicts are abandoned to a fate of filth and marginalization. The criticism is aimed squarely at the management of security and social services, deemed guilty of a "total failure" in protecting decency and human dignity.
"We're calling for a cleanup that's first and foremost humane, and then environmental," Borrelli concludes. "It's not enough to clean the streets: we need constant police presence and a deep commitment from social services. We can't continue to look the other way while death races on the needle. Piazza Cavour must be returned to the citizens, ceasing to be a sanctuary for disregard for the rules."
