A mother's hope defies medical protocols and the cold reality of diagnoses. Patrizia Mercolino, mother of little Domenico—the child admitted to Naples' Monaldi Hospital after receiving a non-usable heart transplant—has broken her silence following the shocking decision by Italy's top experts.
The rejection of the transplant, due to the child's extremely fragile condition, marked a breaking point, but not the family's surrender.
The doctors' verdict and Patrizia's pain
The outcome of the consultation between the cardiac surgery luminaries was a devastating blow: Domenico, in his current condition, would not be able to withstand the impact of such a complex new operation.
"Those words took your breath away. My world collapsed," Patrizia confessed in an interview with the newspaper Il Messaggero. She explained that she listened to the verdict in silence, painfully processing the idea that her son was currently not "healthy" enough to undergo surgery.
The battle for medical records
Despite their partial resignation to the technical verdict, their will to fight remains intact. The family has already submitted an official request to obtain all the medical documentation produced by Monaldi.
The goal is to analyze every single piece of data, every clinical parameter, looking for any clues that may have left room for different interpretations. "We want to examine them, see if there's anything we can hold onto," the mother reiterated, emphasizing that the search for a solution won't stop within national borders.
The race against time and the foreign hypothesis
Time is the main enemy. Domenico is currently being kept alive by ECMO (extracorporeal membrane oxygenation), a lifesaving device that, however, carries extremely serious long-term risks. The knowledge that such support could compromise his liver and other vital organs is pushing the family toward the possibility of transferring him to specialized centers abroad.
For Patrizia, as long as Domenico's heart beats and his lungs breathe, no path can be left untried: the battle for the little boy's life continues, beyond any protocol.

This is truly a difficult and complicated situation, and I'm deeply sorry for Domenico's family. We hope they can find a solution, even though time is short and the conditions are serious. It's important not to lose hope.
