Naples – Fear erupted in the dead of night in the Vomero neighborhood, where yet another road collapse has rekindled the security alarm in Naples' underground area. Around midnight, a large sinkhole opened at the intersection of Via Simone Martini and Via Giuseppe Capaldo, swallowing up part of the roadway.
The alarm was raised immediately, bringing several firefighter teams, State Police officers, and technicians from Naples Services to the scene. The area was quickly cordoned off to ensure the safety of passersby and assess the extent of the damage, which currently appears to be of worrying proportions.
Roads and interventions
Despite the severity of the incident, authorities have not yet ordered the complete closure of the road. To limit traffic disruption in this key part of the city, a one-way system has been implemented. Engineers are currently working to monitor for any water infiltration or further subsidence that could affect adjacent apartment buildings.
The cause of the collapse remains unclear: underground surveys will be carried out in the next few hours to determine whether the collapse was caused by a broken water main or the structural weakness of the local sewer system.
