A phone call to express sympathy and promise commitment. Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni contacted Patrizia Mercolino, mother of little Domenico, who was admitted to Monaldi Hospital after receiving a damaged heart.
The family's lawyer, Francesco Petruzzi, reportedly said: "We will do everything we can to ensure justice," the prime minister assured during the conversation. This was a gesture of institutional support in a matter that has shocked public opinion and cast a spotlight on the handling of the delicate operation.
Campania Region President Roberto Fico also expressed his solidarity with the family, expressing his support during these difficult times.
Mother Patrizia: "I always have hope."
"I spoke first with President Fico and then with Prime Minister Meloni," he told Repubblica in a video. "They expressed their support and told me that justice will be done, but as I told them, the priority now is to help me find a solution for my son." On this point, he says he has received reassurances: "They told me they are already mobilizing."
The woman also reports that she hasn't received any further information from the doctors about her son's condition and reiterates her confidence in the possibility of a new transplant. "I believe and I still have hope," she emphasizes, "that my son will receive a new heart." The woman has no requests for the Heart Team experts, who will meet tomorrow at the Monaldi Hospital, and trusts in their expertise: "They'll do their job."
The wait for the maxi-consultation
Meanwhile, these are crucial hours at Monaldi. An extraordinary "Heart Team" meeting is scheduled for tomorrow: a major consultation with experts from Italy's largest pediatric transplant centers. The goal is to jointly reassess, at the patient's bedside, the possibility of undergoing a second transplant.
The child is still formally on the waiting list for a new organ. However, the clinical picture appears extremely complex.
The opinion of the Child Jesus
The consultation requested by Monaldi at the Bambino Gesù Children's Hospital revealed a critical situation, deemed incompatible with the possibility of undergoing a second operation.
In recent days, the Roman hospital had already expressed a technical opinion emphasizing that the child's seriously compromised condition did not appear to permit a further transplant.
The hospital's president, Tiziano Onesti, reiterated the facility's willingness to cooperate: "There will be a meeting tomorrow or in the next few days where leading experts will physically see the child and give their opinion. We will defer to their opinion." Onesti specified that the hospital is following the case in accordance with the requests received from the competent authority, emphasizing that Bambino Gesù is an integral part of the National Health Service.
The family's hope
Despite the negative medical opinion, the family has not given up hope. The final decision has been postponed to allow for a thorough, collegial evaluation.
The clinical summit convened at Monaldi now represents the final crucial step: the discussion between specialists will determine whether a new operation can be attempted or whether the procedure is confirmed to be unfeasible.
Meanwhile, the case remains at the center of political and health attention, while the family awaits answers and justice for what happened.

The child's situation is very sad. I hope the authorities do everything they can to help the family. Even though there are negative opinions, we must never lose hope and continue fighting for a better future.
