Naples – Over 500 items intended for Carnival were seized by the Provincial Command of the Guardia di Finanza in Naples as part of an extraordinary program of controls against the sale of products potentially dangerous to consumers.

Masks, ties, gloves, baubles, decorations, streamers, glitter, ornaments, holiday gadgets, plastic bats, wigs, and personal care products are just some of the materials identified by officers, often unlabeled or openly counterfeit.

Most of the goods, intended especially for children, were found to be non-compliant with safety and traceability regulations, with the real risk, if placed on the market, of causing harm to health due to the possible presence of harmful materials.

Naples and its province under control

The checks targeted numerous commercial businesses and warehouses in different areas of Naples, including Chiaiano, Pianura, Fuorigrotta, Vomero, San Pietro a Patierno, Poggioreale, San Lorenzo, Vicaria, San Ferdinando, Mercato, and the industrial area.

The Guardia di Finanza has also extended its services to several municipalities in the province: the northern municipalities (Caivano and Casoria), the eastern ones (Giugliano in Campania, Quarto and Qualiano), the western area (Palma Campania, Nola and Sant'Anastasia) and the Oplonti area (Torre del Greco, Castellammare di Stabia, Gragnano, Sorrento and Vico Equense).

The seized goods, if distributed regularly on the market, could have generated illicit profits of tens of thousands of euros, exploiting the high demand linked to Carnival celebrations.

54 individuals reported to the authorities

Following the interventions, the Guardia di Finanza (Fiamme Gialle) reported 35 individuals to the Naples Chamber of Commerce for violations of the Consumer Code, initiating investigations to impose administrative fines of up to €30.000 for each individual. Another 19 individuals were reported to the competent judicial authorities for the crimes of counterfeiting, commercial fraud, and receiving stolen goods.

The operation confirms the Guardia di Finanza's commitment to combating the sale of unsafe products, especially during the holidays, with the aim of protecting consumer health and ensuring fair trade.

It's important that products like these are seized because they pose health risks to consumers, especially children. I hope the authorities will continue to conduct regular checks in the future.
