Naples – The scene is the monumental Piazza Municipio, the city's administrative and tourist hub, but the action captured by a citizen is anything but decorous. A shocking video, sent to Green-Left Alliance MP Francesco Emilio Borrelli, shows what appears to be a serious illegal dumping of hazardous waste directly into street drains.
The video of shame
The footage clearly shows a man wearing a uniform and a cap with the iconic yellow "M" of a well-known international fast food chain. The individual is dragging material out of the restaurant and, according to the witness who filmed the scene, emptying liquids—most likely used frying oil—into a manhole.
A swift gesture, carried out in broad daylight, which immediately sparked outrage among residents and institutions.
Borrelli's attack: "A criminal act."
"If the images were confirmed, we would be facing a true environmental attack," Borrelli stated harshly. The MP emphasized that oil spills into sewers aren't just a matter of degradation, but a crime with direct repercussions:
Damage to the ecosystem: The oils end up directly in the sea, suffocating marine fauna and flora.
Hydrogeological risk: Greasy substances block pipes, facilitating street flooding during the first storms.
“It is unacceptable that a multinational company treats Naples like a private landfill,” concludes the parliamentarian.
Ongoing investigations and risks to the license
The investigation has already begun. The video footage has been forwarded to the Municipal Police Environmental Unit and to the management of ABC Napoli. Investigators will now cross-reference the public surveillance footage with the hazardous waste loading and unloading records (FIR forms) from the affected store.
The business's position is under scrutiny: Borrelli has requested drastic measures, which could range from heavy administrative fines to the suspension of its business license.

It's deeply worrying that things like this are happening in a city like Naples, where there are already serious waste problems. I hope the authorities take serious action to stop these illegal practices that are damaging the environment.
