Rosario Coppola, 52, killed last night in Arzano, on Via Sette Re, may have been the victim of a sensational identity mistake.
A fully-fledged ambush, carried out using typical Camorra methods, but with a disconcerting element: the victim, despite having a criminal record, had no ties to organized crime.
The ambush and the desperate escape
Coppola was in his Smart car with Antonio Persico, 25, a 25-year-old with no criminal record, when the armed attack began. According to initial reports from the Carabinieri, the shots were fired on Via Alberto Barone, where the car was apparently flanked by a motorcycle with at least one gunman aboard.
After the first shots, despite already being seriously injured, the driver attempted a desperate escape, continuing to Via Sette Re, likely in an attempt to call for help. But there was nothing that could be done for the 52-year-old: he died instantly, struck by fatal bullets.
The wounded man: “Wasn’t he the target?”
Antonio Persico was injured in the arm. He was rescued and taken to San Giuliano Hospital in Giugliano, where his life is not in danger.
His testimony is considered central to the investigation: he will be the one to clarify what happened in those tense minutes, but also to explain the nature of his relationship with the victim, given the significant age difference.
The most disturbing lead: a case of mistaken identity
But the element that is most driving the investigation is a detail that emerged in the last few hours: Rosario Coppola bore a striking resemblance to a suspected Camorra boss, believed to be close to the Monfregolo clan, who was recently released from prison and lived in the same area.
This detail opens up a disturbing scenario: if confirmed, the murder could be the result of mistaken identity, a fatal error that led the killers to target the wrong man.
Investigations underway: cameras and cell phones under scrutiny
The investigation is being conducted by the Carabinieri of the Arzano station and the Casoria Operations Section, under the coordination of the Naples District Anti-Mafia Directorate. Investigators have already acquired video surveillance footage from the area of the ambush and along the route taken by the car.
The cell phones of the victim and the injured man are also being examined to reconstruct their contact details, acquaintances, and movements. Family members and friends are also being interviewed, a meticulous process typical of the preliminary phase of a homicide investigation.
A crime that speaks the language of the Camorra
The manner of the ambush—the motorcycle flanking, the shots fired at close range, the rapid execution—clearly suggest a Camorra-style attack. Yet Rosario Coppola, despite being known to law enforcement due to his long criminal record, was not associated with organized crime.
He was a house painter. When he was killed, he was still wearing his work clothes, a detail that paints a picture of an ordinary life suddenly shattered.
Now it's up to investigators to unravel the mystery: was it a mistaken target or a murder with a motive yet to be determined? The answer could come from the words of the injured young man and the CCTV footage. At stake is the truth about a crime that has shocked Arzano.
