Naples – A lawyer believed to be managing the clan's financial interests, public officials accused of providing confidential information, and a system of favors and intimidation that allegedly transformed a public hospital into a criminal stronghold.

This is the scenario reconstructed by the Naples District Anti-Mafia Directorate in the investigation into Camorra infiltration within the San Giovanni Bosco Hospital, culminating in four arrests ordered by the investigating judge at the request of the Naples Anti-Mafia Directorate.

At the center of the investigation is lawyer Salvatore D'Antonio, 51, accused of external complicity in mafia association because he is believed to be permanently involved in the economic interests of the Contini clan, one of the historic branches of the Secondigliano Alliance.

The professional and the management of the clan's capital

According to the Naples Prosecutor's Office, the lawyer allegedly managed and reinvested large sums of money linked to the clan, including those accumulated through insurance fraud. The proceeds were allegedly used to purchase real estate, cars, and even works of art, with the aim of consolidating and increasing the organization's assets.

Investigators from the Guardia di Finanza's Economic and Financial Police Unit and the Carabinieri Investigative Unit also allege that the professional had ongoing relationships with several public officials, from whom he allegedly acquired confidential information useful to the criminal group's strategies. Investigators described this relationship as one of "close and stable interpenetration" with the organization.

Six public officials among those under investigation

A total of 76 people are under investigation. Among them are six public officials: a retired State Police inspector, an INPS official serving in Naples, a retired former employee of the hospital's assets office, two doctors currently employed at the hospital, and another doctor who was employed at the time of the incident.

According to the prosecution, some of them allegedly acted as privileged channels for acquiring confidential information and promoting the clan's interests within the healthcare facility.

The control of San Giovanni Bosco

The investigation, which stemmed from the statements of a justice collaborator, reportedly documented the clan's widespread control over the hospital's internal economic activities.

Through threats and extortion of healthcare managers, fictitious ownership, and collusive relationships with public officials, the affiliates allegedly operated bars, snack bars, and vending machines without licenses and without paying the fees due to the local health authority. They also illegally used the facility's utilities, thereby significantly impacting public coffers.

A system that, according to investigators, would have guaranteed constant income to the criminal gang.

Rigged hospitalizations and fake certificates

The investigation also uncovered an alleged illicit network linked to healthcare services and ambulances. Through a syndicate operating in the healthcare transport sector, and with the complicity of medical personnel, paramedics, private security personnel, and employees of other companies present at the hospital, favors were allegedly granted to clan members.

These include hospital admissions obtained by circumventing official procedures, false medical certificates used to obtain illegal releases, and the illegal transportation of bodies via ambulance, in violation of the regulations governing funeral services.

Insurance scams and simulated accidents

At the same time, with the help of compliant professionals, the suspects allegedly organized numerous fraud schemes against insurance companies by simulating road accidents. The scheme involved recruiting paid false witnesses and preparing false medical reports to obtain undue compensation for the clan's coffers.

Threats to the ASL general director

The order signed by investigating judge Ivana Salvatore also highlights the climate of intimidation reported by Ciro Verdoliva, then general director of ASL Napoli 1 Centro.

The health management had in fact initiated a remediation effort to exclude areas attributable to the Continis from contracts for cleaning, ancillary services, and internal economic activities within the hospital. This decision, according to the documents, coincided with intense pressure and threats against the manager.

Verdoliva formalized the reports, collaborating with the Naples Public Prosecutor's Office to denounce the intimidating climate and continue the administrative cleanup of the healthcare facility.

Reading the article, it all seems very confusing; too many details don't add up, names and dates are mixed up, and the hospital is described as a stronghold, but concrete evidence is lacking. We hope the prosecutor's office will shed light on this matter promptly and accurately, but it will take time.
