He lost three fingers and is set to be arrested. Inter Milan fined, and the Curva Nord stadium is at risk of being closed.
A senseless gesture tainted Cremonese-Inter and raised security alarms in stadiums.
The firecracker thrown by the Nerazzurri fans injured Emil Audero and led to the identification of the fan responsible, who was also seriously injured. Now the sanctions are coming: a fine for the club and possible severe measures against organized fans.
The roar and the fear
A sharp, violent, sudden explosion. The noise reverberates through the air of the Zini Stadium at the start of the second half, when the match seems already headed toward a predictable outcome. From the thick smoke emerges the yellow silhouette of Emil Audero, lying on the ground as if struck by a bullet. It's not a direct impact, but the shockwave of a firecracker thrown from the section occupied by Inter fans.
The Cremonese goalkeeper touches his right ear, stunned. An eerie, panic-filled silence falls around him. Teammates and opponents rush over: Dimarco, Lautaro, Baschirotto.
Cristian Chivu also approaches to check on Audero and try to calm the crowd. Scenes that remind us how fragile the balance of a match can become when violence enters the fray.
Audero grit his teeth
For a few moments, the greatest fear lingers: the match is suspended, the result overturned, endless controversy. Instead, Audero gets up. He has a thigh injury, his ear continues to ring, but he doesn't even consider leaving. He wants to continue. And he will continue until the final whistle.
A choice that transcends his recent Nerazzurri past—four appearances in the second-star Scudetto—and speaks of style and character. A gesture reminiscent of other similar incidents, such as that of Edoardo Bove, struck by a bottle in the Rome derby years ago: the same composure, the same dignity. Class, even off the ball, is never a coincidence.
The responsible person "caught"
The fan who threw the firecracker displayed a different kind of humanity. Law enforcement quickly identified him: while handling a second device, he lost three fingers and was hospitalized. He will be arrested.
The day, however, didn't end with the final whistle. In the evening, at Cremona station, moments of high tension between ultras and police erupted: people on the platforms to escape the crush, fear among travelers not attending the match, and a disorderly queue that prolonged an already bitter Sunday.
The sporting consequences
On a sporting level, Inter avoided the worst thanks to Audero's decision to remain on the pitch. Since there was no direct impact on the match, the 0-2 result will stand.
Sanctions, however, will not be lacking. The Nerazzurri club will have to pay a significant fine under the principle of strict liability. The price for organized fans could be even heavier: in addition to the ban on away matches, already applied in other cases, the possibility of closing the Curva Nord at San Siro for one or more matches is also on the table.
A high price for a gesture that has nothing to do with football.

It's strange how such an incident could happen in a stadium, especially considering the safety that should be in place. The fine to Inter seems fair to me, but the risk of closing the Curva Nord is exaggerated.
