During a nighttime raid by the Penitentiary Police inside the Naples-Poggioreale "Giuseppe Salvia" prison, a new attempt to smuggle cell phones and narcotics intended for inmates was foiled.
During the operation, two men were arrested red-handed while attempting to smuggle electronic devices and drugs into the prison using remote-controlled drones. Officers responded quickly, intercepting and seizing three aircraft before they reached the prison grounds.
The intervention of the Penitentiary Police
The operation was announced by the Deputy General Secretary of the National Autonomous Union of Penitentiary Police, Chief Commissioner Vincenzo Santoriello, who expressed his appreciation for the speed and professionalism demonstrated by the personnel on duty.
The operational coordination provided by the institute's director, Giulia Russo, was crucial in stopping what would have been yet another illicit supply intended for the prison population.
Business behind bars
According to the union, the Naples prison continues to experience a particularly delicate phase in terms of internal security. Illegally imported narcotics fetch prices up to ten times higher than the outside market, fueling a parallel economic cycle capable of generating tension among inmates and posing serious health risks.
The use of drones is now one of the most widespread ways to circumvent controls and supply drug dealing hubs within prisons.
Staffing emergency and safety
Adding to the criticality of illegal trafficking is the structural shortage of staff. With approximately 2.200 inmates, over 200 Penitentiary Police officers are missing from the planned staffing, with inevitable repercussions on the day-to-day management of security.
"Despite the serious difficulties," Santoriello emphasized, "the staff continues to work with an extraordinary sense of duty and spirit of sacrifice. However, concrete action is needed to strengthen staffing and ensure greater safety in prisons."
