Naples – A violent attack that could have turned tragic occurred inside Naples' Poggioreale prison, where a prison police officer and an inmate were injured during an attack by another inmate who had already been reported several times for disciplinary problems.
The incident has refocused attention on the safety conditions in Campania's prisons, while messages of support and calls for concrete action have arrived from the institutional sphere.
The attack and the decisive intervention
According to reports, Inspector Carmine Nunziata, coordinator of the Rome section of the prison, was attacked by an inmate with previous reports of misconduct.
During the most heated moments of the attack, another inmate, Michele Serpico, intervened, placing himself between the attacker and the officer in an attempt to stop his fury. He was also injured during the struggle.
The prisoner's intervention would have prevented much more serious consequences, allowing the situation to be contained before it degenerated further.
The solidarity of the institutions
Campania Regional Council President Manfredi expressed his sympathy for the injured inspector, describing it as "an event that could have turned into a tragedy," emphasizing the need for a thorough reflection on prison security conditions.
The president also publicly acknowledged the inmate who intervened in defense of the officer, calling his gesture an example of humanity capable of emerging even in the most difficult contexts.
"Serving the state cannot mean risking your life."
In his message, Manfredi emphasized that similar incidents must never happen again, reiterating that the work of prison workers cannot depend on chance or individual heroism.
Best wishes for a speedy recovery were extended to both Inspector Nunziata and inmate Serpico, along with thanks for the former's dedication in carrying out his duties and the latter's courage in intervening to stop the attack.

It's truly incredible that such violent incidents occur in prisons; security conditions are worrying. I don't understand why there aren't more controls to prevent situations like this. The lives of officers and inmates are at stake.
